Interior designers may perform some or all of the following activities, among other duties and responsibilities:

Research and analyze client's goals and requirements, along with the developing the design documents, drawings and diagrams that outline those needs.

Formulate the preliminary space plans and the two- and three-dimensional design concept studies and sketches that integrate the client's needs based on knowledge of interior design principles and theories of human behavior.

Confirm that preliminary space plans and design concepts are considered safe, functional, aesthetically appropriate, in addition to confirming that these elements meet all public health, safety and welfare requirements, including code, accessibility, environmental and sustainability guidelines.

Select colors, materials and finishes to appropriately convey the design concept and to meet socio-psychological, functional, maintenance, life-cycle performance, environmental and safety requirements.

Select and specify the furniture, fixtures, equipment and millwork that are aligned with the design concept, including layout drawings and detailed product description.

Develop the contract documentation to facilitate pricing, procurement and installation of furniture.

Provide project management services, including preparation of project budgets and schedules.

Prepare construction documents consisting of plans, elevations, details and specifications to illustrate various elements of the design concept, including the non-structural and/or non-seismic partition layouts, power and communications locations, ceiling plans, lighting designs, furniture layouts and materials and finishes.

Prepare construction documents that adhere to regional building and fire codes, municipal codes and any other jurisdictional statutes, regulations and guidelines that apply to the interior space.

Coordinate and collaborate with allied design professionals who provide additional consulting services for the design project, including, but not limited to, architects, structural engineers, mechanical engineers and electrical engineers, in addition to various specialty consultants retained for the design project.

Confirm that construction documents for non-structural and/or non-seismic construction are signed and sealed by the responsible interior designer as applicable to fulfill jurisdictional requirements for filing with code enforcement officials.

Administer contract documents, bids and negotiations as the client's agent.

Observe and report information about the progress and completion of the design project, in addition to conducting the post-occupancy evaluation and preparing post-occupancy reports on behalf of the client...

The interiors design job is indeed catching up, what with many high-profile clients and the burgeoning average household, wanting the best living spaces, humanly conceivable.

The future really seems bright and may the glory prevail.

I would like to add how many of my clients are seeking to have green plants incorporated into their rooms and minds. Indeed, the world is going green on the inside, despite depleting forest cover.

Looking at the current context, many youths are now involved into interior designing sector as there are lots of institution that offers interior designing courses for interested people. This was just what I have felt throughout all these years. But I would certainly like to ask some question regarding exterior home designing. I am looking for some outdoor Furniture to set up at my backyard and I have also a small swimming pool. So, what kind of furniture is appropriate for me? and I also don't want to compromise in anything this time.

We pursue licensure of interior design so that qualified and vetted ID professionals can practice “within code based construction environments” independent of other licensed professionals. We can now see the goal…..parity with, and subsequent independence from, allied licensed design professionals (read Architects). A noble goal no doubt. Many of us hear the call of such a challenging goal- for many reasons. Yet, choosing not to pursue licensure, or to climb Mt. Everest, should be considered nothing but a conscientious free choice and it certainly should not be looked down upon or as an act of professional treason. Conversely licensure, as important as it is, should not be looked upon as the ultimate level of professional status but one of many penultimate goals with many paths to access it. Licensure does not equate to professional status- it does however grant the licensee special privileges and responsibilities. Somehow we seem to have adopted licensure, and the ability to work independently in code based construction environments as the ultimate goal- is it really? If it is we have some work to do.

Should any interior designer wish to obtain a license they can freely choose to take the proverbial path to status as a licensed interior design professional. We can no longer force anybody to take a particular path or force them to turn around and return to base camp. Now we just need to make sure the paths to professional status are well-marked and well-travelled. Where is this going? Funny you should ask- I am introducing a new analogism- professional path identification and maintenance (time to wean myself of the militaristic and sports metaphors) which as any hiker/biker knows is critical to….well quite simply-not getting lost.

seriously, if you can apply for state college/university which has accredited program in interior design, it will save you some money.

as long as the program is accredited, you will learn all the basic skills you need for your career. the most important thing is real working experience and networking. interning and working for firms that you like will be very beneficial to your career. without real work experience, even you go to a famous art schools, it doesn't help much.

don't get yourself into more debt.
